CCC Week 9: Examining the Answers

Now that you have sources that should help you answer your research question, it's time to figure out how your different answers will work together to form a single, unified paper.

To accomplish this, you can compare or contrast the answers. To do so, look for points of focus--in other words, points where the sources are either similar or different--and use these points to evaluate the logic of the answers to determine which answer or answers make the most sense to you.

For example, if you were searching for a new car, you would look at various cars in the price range you can afford. Then, once you have made a list of possible vehicles, you would look at points of focus to determine what vehicle is best for you. These points of focus may include gas mileage, features, warranties, and customer ratings.

Re-read chapter 10 if you have any questions about how to develop and organize a compare/contrast analysis. Pay close attention to the section on how to organize using block or alternating formats.

With this in mind, please answer the following in your comment:
  1. Looking at your sources, what might you use as points of focus to compare/contrast their ideas?
  2. Based on these points of focus, do your sources answer your question in similar ways or are there major differences in the answers? What are these similarities or differences?
  3. Might you organize the body paragraphs of your draft using the block format or the alternating? Why?

  1. 1. The first source has some statistics that seem to prove that gun control does reduce crime in some areas, while the other claims there is no evidence to prove it changes anyhing. I will have to seek out the information on my own to see which one is correct.
    2. There are several differences in the answers. each one has some really good evidence to prove their point. the differences are the statistics each source has to show the point they are making. Im curious to see where each got their information from.
    3. I will probably use the alternating format, I think it is easier to keep each point fresh in the readers mind that way. Rather than the block format which makes some readers have to go back over the points made previously to compare.

  2. I am going to use the way gun-control can be effective in some ways but in not others.
Their are a lot of differences with the sources that I chose because each one of them have different answers and statistics.
I am going to use the block format because I like to just stick to one topic and source, stay with it until it is finished and then go on with the next one.

  3. This is Alison Slater.
    1. Some scientists say that humans are partially at fault for global warming, but at the other hand some scientists say that humans have nothing to do with global warming and that instead it’s a natural cycle of the earth and the atmosphere in which we live in.
    2. I think there are both similarities in my sources to answer my question and differences. The similarities are easier to work with than the differences, but I’ll find a way to make it all work out.
    3. I believe I organized my body paragraphs using the block format, because its easier to deal with my information to work it into my paper.

  4. 1. Looking at my sources I would have to say that all actually agree on cell phone use while driving puts drivers a four times the greater risk of crashing and therefore, should be banned. The only ones who feel cell phones are being unfairly singled out would be the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association.

    2. My sources answer my question in similar ways. Once again all sources feel that cell phones puts drivers
at four times the greater risk. Two of my sources both conducted a simulation studies. All my sources agree that hand-held cell phones and hand-free has no different affect, both are considered dangerous.

    3. I alternated my paragraphs and also combined them because they all seemed to have the same simularities
    and studies as one another.

  5. By looking at my sources, I have decided to focus on hands free versus hand held cell phones. Both require large amounts of concentration which distracts you from the road. Both of my sources agreed that when using your cell phone you are taking your attention away from the things that you should be paying attention to. Using cell phones distracts you, not matter what kind or how you are using them. I chose to use the block format because I felt like it would sort my ideas out well.

  6. one point of focus i am going to use is that private gun dealers dont have to do background checks, and that licensed dealers have to do background checks. they are different but they go together in my paper because i use them to argue my point about getting guns out of peoples hands. they both prove my point because private dealers can sell guns to anyone and licensed dealers are required to do background checks. i think im organizing it in block format because i did one paragraph on private dealers and the other on licensed dealers.

  7. 1. Looking at your sources, what might you use as points of focus to compare/contrast their ideas?

**I'm not going to lie i feel like this was a difficult essays to write and it surprises me that i had such a hard time writing it when writing usually comes easy to me. I believe that i compared the 18 age to being an adult.

    2. Based on these points of focus, do your sources answer your question in similar ways or are there major differences in the answers? What are these similarities or differences?

** I believe that are similar in every source that i looked at regrading the subject and point of view i was looking for.

Might you organize the body paragraphs of your draft using the block format or the alternating? Why?

** I believe i have used the block format it was easier used.

Mr.P.Snow I'm not sure if i did what you asked all I know is that i tried my best and i hope that is alright.

  8. I'm going to compare and contrast arguments, and the stance of the person making that judgment. I'm going to look into stereotypical values that are possessed by the people who fit into the roles of each topic. The three topic I'm going to look into is sex drugs and violence. I will try to find common facts and ideas to validate their legitimacy, find pros and cons of contrasting practices with a perspective that encompasses more than one party.

There are both agreements and disagreements among my sources. Two sources imply that the medias constant cover of sex and violence exposes the youth and predisposes them to a similar fate. There has also been consistent and conclusive research that validates that the topics the media outlets cover persuades, and affects the outcome of the audiences lifestyle.

I'm not sure which way I'm going to set up my paragraphs, I am going to use the one that helps make my argument more conclusive, persuasive, and consistent.

  9. Looking at my sources the point of focus that i will use is if the imformation in the source answers my research question or not. If the information answers my question, I try to fit the information in. If it doesn't answer the question, I go on to the next source.
My sources do answer my questions in similar ways, because they all show what problems there are with health care. Many also show what might be done to fix the problems.
I think I will probably use the block format because, with all of the information available to me on the topic, I think it will be easier to fit all of the information together to make my paper clear and concise.

  10. Looking at my sources I used the ideas that the real problem here is misbelieve…. What some believe to be true of homosexual relationships is in fact not the way it really is. People are afraid of what they don’t know. I believe that my sources all pretty much had the same viewpoint on my subject so there wasn’t contrasting views. In my research I did find a few sites that were on the total opposite side of this argument and have closed minds to the subject. I believe we call this belief perseverance in psych class. I would use people’s beliefs as points to compare their ideas because that is probably the main reason for the differing views. I think my sources have answered my research question mostly the same way, basically there are numerous benefits to legalizing gay marriage. Isn’t it only fair that we all be treated as equal?? I think I will use the block format to organize my paragraphs because that is the way I always have.

  11. 1. One source tells about several court cases, one that over ruled a gun ban in D.C., and two others that tried to do the same in Chicago but failed. I am going to use these and other cases to show why one case worked and another failed.
    2. My sources are similar in answering my question, the D.C. case showed that federal enclaves are guaranteed the right to bear arms but not the states, according to the second amendment, and the case in Chicago showed according to the second amendment the states are not guaranteed guns.
    3. I will try for Block format so I can easily organize.

  12. 1).Looking at the sources am saying cell phonrs and put people life in dangerous and at high first of crashing.

2).My sources answer my question in similar ways. my sources show how hand held cell phones and hand free has no different affect they both are dangerous.

3).I alternation the body paragraphs because they all have similar detail as one another.

  13. 1) People veiw piont on abortions, for and against and why
    2) yes my sources answer my question.
3)Block format. it seems easier to me to use block formating

  14. 1.) The points of focus that I would compare would have to be explaining that the revenue produced by a sanctioned fight will help with New York States financial deficit. I have compared many stories and the nubers produced by fight cards only makes sense it will help.
2.) All of my sources have made good points in some different ways, but in the end they stated the same claims. Each source used easy to prove facts that is supported by direct quotes which helps out.
3.) Block format is what I used because my topics were easier to come by and there were plents of sources to support my sub topics this way.

  15. my major points are that a persons age shouldnt change the punishment in certain circumstances, the effects of alcohol on young persons has life long consequences, and underage drinking has terrible effects on the brain.

the sources i used all agreed, underage drinking must be slowed down, but in reality, we cant stop it.

i used block formatting, it made my topic much clearer to me.

  16. 1*I am going to focus on the main point of as what can we do to reduce or even stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases amongst our teen community.
2*in similar ways because although it is a controversial argument majority are pro argumentative. Things like free testing and free contraceptive distribution answers a lot of the questions we may ask pertaining to how to stop the spread of STD’s
    3*block format

  17. 1) I am going to focus my points on Substance abuse, marital problems, and unresolved mental issues effecting the chance of child abuse.
    2) David Pelzer and Precious had similar home lives. They both had parents who had marital problems and unresolved mental issues. David’s mother abused alcohol.
    3) I am going to use the block format. I think it will be easier to read and compare and contrast seeing as both David and Precious don’t have all similar experiences.

  18. 1.By looking at my sources, im going to use and focus on the benefits of building sports stadium with public funding. Sports stadium can lead to community tax revenue increase,Ecconomy developments and happy sports fans.

2.My source answer my questions in many differents ways. First it talk about what sports stadiums will do for community taxes.Second it talked about sports stadiums helping the economy.Finaly, it mention bringing more spots fans into the community.

3.I would probably use the blockformats because in that way it is easier to keep track of what you doing and put them in order as you write your paper.

  19. 1)By looking at my source, I am going to focus on whether or not gun control laws are too strict.
2)My sources have very different view points on the subject. In one of my sources, people believe that gun control laws are too strict and that they are against a persons second amendment right. Another one of my sources talks about how guns kill millions of people each year and that they are way too easy to get a hold of. They believe the laws should be stricter.
    3) I think it would be easier to organize my paper using the block format becuase then I could talk about one view point and then switch and compare the other point of view.

  20. 1. Looking at my sources I will use the consequences of climate change and the possible solutions to climate change to compare and contrast their ideas.
    2. The sources do answer my questions in similar ways. There are undeniable consequences to climate change and there are actions that we can take to reduce those consequences.

    3. I am going to organize the paper using the block format. I will have body paragraphs highlighting climate change and then paragraphs stating what we can do to fight climate change. I am going to organize this way because the solutions address all of the issues not each specifically.

  21. 1.) I used the statistics about phone-related accidents as my main proof to support my paper against talking on cell phones while driving. Also, I provided sources to support these statistics.
2.) I used different sources for my paper but they all pretty much have one thing in common. The relations of accidents to drivers talking on the phone were irrefutable.
3.) I think I will be using the alternating paragraphs to organize my paper. My paper has different points to prove so I think it will work out really well.

  22. My research topic is why the drinking age should be reduced to 18. I will use key points like what you can do when your 18, like join the military, but not drink. I will also compare and contrast different experts views on why or why not the drinking ago should be lowered. There are major differences in some of my sources, and they both hold valid points. Some similarities that the sources agree on is that one of the major reasons for college deaths is binge drinking. A difference would be that some believe lowering the drinking age would prevent this, while others argue it would only make it worse. I will use the alternating format, because it shows both sides, but I can make my argument stronger.

  23. 1-Looking at your sources, what might you use as points of focus to compare/contrast their ideas?I used keys points such as,gun laws, assualt rifles, private sales, age limit....
2-Based on these points of focus, do your sources answer your question in similar ways or are there major differences in the answers? What are these similarities or differences?
yes they do,like banning of semi-fully automatic guns, every where I looked there seemed to be no use for them and so they should be banned.
3-Might you organize the body paragraphs of your draft using the block format or the alternating? Why?
yes I will, because using the block format I had more ideas and key points that I came up with that I could write another paragraph on.So I had to move paragraphs around.
