B&S Week 6: Revising a Paper

This week, we discussed the purposes and strategies for revising. We said that revision is "seeing the ideas again in order to improve ideas and correct mistakes". It is where we shift thoughts around, add or remove ideas, tighten the unity of our paper, and ensure that our ideas are in the best form.

Remember, revising is the third stage of our writing process. In terms of the total time spent on a writing project, it should make up 50%-60% of the efforts.

As a part of our revision process for this paper, we participated in a peer review. We said that a peer review can be beneficial in many ways. Here is your chance to reflect on how our peer review can help or has helped you revise your draft.

Please respond to the following questions in your comment:

  1. How have you revised in the past? Did you spend 50% of your time on this process?
  2. Name and explain two strengths that the peer review revealed about your paper.
  3. Name and explain two things that the peer review exposed about your paper that needed improvement.
  4. Other than peer review, what revision technique(s) will you use for this paper or in the future?

  1. i liked using peer review.i thought this was good technique because i had two different opinions that helped with my paper. it was helpful to see where i had to express more of my idea or remove some of it. it gave me more insight on how to better improve on the paper. it was very constructive.it has helped me to see how to take different approaches in writing a good paper.

  2. I liked using the peer review process for this paper. I have in the past just given my paper to my husband or friend to review. They would only review for minor things like spelling, commas and sentence structure. It was really nice to have someone read my paper for actual content and ideas. I found that when reviewing someone elses paper it gave me ideas for my paper. Do's and Don'ts. I am glad that someone reviewed my paper because I didn't have a proper thesis statement. I had a question and not an answer in the statement. I revised that part of my paper and a couple of other little things. I am pleased with the outcome and hope that you will be too.

  3. My husband and son, Zack look over my papers for me and will probly continue to do so. I have no clue on how much time I spend revising, it's just some thing you do. I realy enjoyed the peer review. It gave me suggestions on where/what to add and what to combine. In the future I will continue to have my husband, son and maybe some one from class look at my paper.

  4. I have never revised like this before, all I have ever done was just reread my final paper before handing it in. I never would take the time to take it all apart and put it back together. Two strentghs on the peer review were good details and it flowed nicely. Two weaknesses were my thesis was'nt clear and maybe the conclusion could have tied the paper together better , so I revised . I thought the peer review exercise was great and from now on I will have family and friends read them for me also.

  5. When I write a paper, revising it is actually my favorite part of the process.I like to revise because it gives me the chance to add and correct my paper to make it even more appealing to the reader. When i revised in the past, I would look for more ways to add extra details and examples to my paper to make it a bit more interesting so the reader doesn't get bored reading my paper. Also when i used to revise my papers before this class, I would normally check for the spelling and grammar first. Now i know to do that last so i don't waste any of my time and energy. Usually when i revise, I do spend most of the process revising, to catch any errors or to add and take out stuff. The peer review didnt really help me out in this situation because the people that reviewed my paper didnt really find anything wrong with it... except for like one or two suggestions which did help me out a little bit. The two strengths that the peer review revealed about my paper was that I had good flow and everything was in unity. There wasn't really anytihng in my paper that needed improvements after the peer review. The two things that were noticed though was that maybe I could have reworded my thesis to make it into one sentence instead of two. Also, since I had so much detail, I split up some paragraphs so they weren't so long. In the future I will definitely utilize the new revision method we learned in class like to find the unity and everything else.
